Is the "killer app" for IPv6 YouTube?
February 3rd, 2010 -
The extremely quiet announcement last week from Google about its image and video
distribution servers being enabled for IPv6 dropped like a bombshell this week.
Service Providers on the IPv6 Internet, like Hurricane Electric (HE), noticed a
surge in IPv6 traffic in scales of magnitude. In fact, "30-1" was used by Martin
Levy of HE. Also, Ron Broersma from the Defense Research Engineering Network (DREN)
noticed that "IPv6 traffic suddenly increased by 4 to 5 times."
Now this doesn't mean if you happen to have IPv6 connectivity you will get your
video and audio on YouTube over IPv6. Just like their applications, you have
to be part of their IPv6 program:
http://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/
Which means, you need to resolve their AAAA records.
However, there is a work around for those of us who want to use Google and YouTube
over IPv6. Just change your IPv6 DNS resolvers to the following:
- Hurricane Electric: 2001:470:20::2
- GoGoNet/Freenet6: 2001:5c0:1000:11::2 or 2001:5c0:1001::194
